There's a private joke between my friend and me - if I cook something that turns out badly she says that I must have followed the recipe. Usually if I follow a recipe verbatum it turns out less well than if I use my own judgement.
Typically, in the kitchen I improvise. It's very seldom terrible, usually it's pretty good. And, sometimes it's spectacular - in my opinion anyway. That's when I get a scratch pad out during dinner and write down what I did, the best I can remember.
